Kwik-E-Mart, Los Angeles

While I didn't fall for the trick of paying $10 to see a cartoon tv show in a movie theater like millions of other people did this weekend, I did go visit a Kwik-E-Mart since we have one in LA. I'm not sure it was worth the 25-minute wait in the hot sun to get inside a 7-Eleven, but it was cool. I purchased one of those Sprinklicious donuts (mmmmm... donut), a Buzz cola, and a plastic Squishee cup. I did catch two (free) movies this week... Sicko and Knocked Up.

World Series of Football

England's Chelsea, Mexico's Tigres, and Korea's Suwon Bluewings were in town this week to play in two doubleheaders at the Home Depot Center. There were two matches on Tuesday and two matches today.

7/17/2007 LA Galaxy (0) vs. Tigres UANL (3)
7/17/2007 Chelsea FC (1) vs. Suwon Samsung Bluewings (0)
7/21/2007 Suwon Samsung Bluewings (0) vs. Tigres UANL (3)
7/21/2007 LA Galaxy (0) vs. Chelsea FC (1)

As you can see, the Galaxy played two matches without scoring a goal, but more surprising was that Chelsea only scored twice (Drogba and Terry). Tigres ended up winning the tournament based on goal differential, although they never played Chelsea. There were a lot of empty seats on Tuesday night, which just goes to show that Chelsea can't buy their fans. Today's doubleheader was sold out but only because it was supposed to be David Beckham's first appearance as a Los Angeles Galaxy player. Due to his injured ankle, he only played the last 15 minutes of match, but it was enough to please the crowd and the cameras. It was an exciting moment, but I hope people get over it. There were definitely plenty of people at the game that had no interest in soccer and were just there to see him. In fact, before Beckham came out, most of the people in my section spent most of the game facing backwards staring at Posh, Katie Holmes & Suri, Brooke Shields and all the celebs who were sitting in the box behind me.

Chelski Comes To Town

This week, one of the biggest soccer clubs in the world, Chelsea, is in town from London to play a couple of friendly matches at the Home Depot Center. Today, they came to the Adidas store in Santa Monica - walking distance from my apartment. They had an autograph session, but it was only open to 50 random drawing winners and their guests. While you'll never see me cheering for the team (I support Manchester United), I couldn't pass up the chance to meet some of the best players in the world, so I entered. And won. Pretty much the entire team was there (except injured Michael Ballack) and they all signed my jersey... Petr Cech, Michael Essien, Ricardo Carvalho, Andriy Shevchenko, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, Arjen Robben, Salomon Kalou, John Terry... and everyone else. I can count 25 autographs on my jersey, although I can't recognize all of them. It was a pretty cool experience. On Tuesday night, they'll be playing Korea's Suwon Bluewings and on Saturday they'll play the LA Galaxy in what is supposed to be David Beckham's first match, although he's got a swollen ankle, so who knows.

World Music Weekend

Three days off, three concerts. Last night it was the psychedelic '60s band from Brazil, Os Mutantes who were amazing at the El Rey. Tonight, I went to a free show at the Getty and saw Los Amigos Invisibles from Venezuela. And tomorrow I'm going to the Hollywood Bowl to see London's Groove Armada and Mexico City's Café Tacuba.

Becks and Posh Come To Town

Last night Victoria and David Beckham arrived in town and today was the official presentation of Becks to the LA Galaxy at the Home Depot Center in Carson. Galaxy General Manger Alexi Lalas presented David his new #23 jersey and David said a few words. Also there was MLS Commissioner Don Garber, AEG President Timothy J. Leiweke, Galaxy Head Coach Frank Yallop, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Posh was also there to watch the ceremony. I'd seen Becks a couple of times before but it was my first time seeing a real live Spice Girl, so I think I took more pics of her. I didn't get a chance to meet them, but hopefully sometime soon.

Birthday Weekend Wrapup

On Saturday night, I went down to the Galaxy game. They were losing 2-0 to Kansas City until Cobi Jones was subbed on and scored twice. Beckham will be arriving this week. His first game is supposed to be against Chelsea on the 21st. On Sunday, ScooterBobby came down from Santa Barbara Vespa and gave my LX150 it's first service and hopefully also fixed an intermittent problem it's been having. So far, so good. Then on Sunday night, Niki took me to Fogo de Chão for my birthday dinner. And tonight, I saw a really funny movie called The Foot Fist Way.

Independence Day

I was expecting to celebrate Venezuela's Independence Day tomorrow, but instead I'm here celebrating the USA's holiday. Today was a good day though... I went to the Farmer's Market in Santa Monica, then I went for a bike ride to Venice, and then went to a BBQ in Marina Del Rey with Mary and watched the fireworks show there.

My foot was really hurting last week, but after resting it this past weekend, it's feeling better now. I still have no idea what I did to it. Last week I saw a screening of A Mighty Heart at Paramount and I went to the cemetery screening of Roman Holiday - my favorite Audrey Hepburn / Vespa flick. I remind myself each day that it's not a good idea to ride around town on my Vespa with a hot princess. Also last week, I went to the Staples Center to pick out my L.A. Kings season tickets for the upcoming hockey season. Last year I was in row 11 behind the "Kings shoot once" goal but this year I'm in row 10 behind the "Kings shoot twice" goal. So, it's a bit of an upgrade.
