Movies, Birthdays

I saw a bunch of movies this past week: Shut Up & Sing (a really good documentary about the Dixie Chicks after their 2003 remark about Bush), Notes On A Scandal (Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett... good performances, so-so movie), Blades Of Glory (Will Ferrell and Napoleon Dynamite as figure skaters - hilarious), Disturbia (teen thriller - not bad), and Next (upcoming Nicolas Cage/Julianne Moore film). Also last week, I think almost everyone I know had a birthday. On Saturday, I had a fun night celebrating Lisa's B-day. We started out with some bowling at Lucky Strike and ended up playing darts at Power House. I bowled a 114 - not that great, but it was enough to win! There's a King's game tomorrow night - the only game I'll be attending in February.

Jamie Morris : Jersey Retirement, Team USA, Brazil (Again), PS3 : Everyone Wearing #20 in Warmups
Everyone Wearing #20 in Warmups
Jersey Retirement, Team USA, Brazil (Again), PS3

Last night I attended the Luc Robitallie Jersey Retirement Ceremony at the Staples Center. Luc (LUUUUUUUC) is the Kings all-time leading scorer. I was actually at the game last year when he tied and broke the scoring record and then added a third goal for a hat trick. He retired after last season and tonight the Kings honored him tonight by retiring the #20 jersey. Only 4 other Kings have had their jerseys retired (Rogie Vachon #30, Marcel Dionne #16, Dave Taylor #18, and Wayne Gretzky #99). Vachon and Gretzky were at the ceremony along with several other of Luc's former teammates and coaches. The ceremony was a really cool experience that ended with the #20 jersey being raised to the rafters of the Staples Center. Unfortunately, after the ceremony the Kings played against the Phoenix Coyotes (managed by Gretzky) and blew a 2-0 lead to lose their seventh straight game.

Earlier in the day, I went down to the Home Depot Center and saw a soccer match between the United States and Denmark. It was a good game in which we came from behind to win 3-1.

Also since my last update, I went to a few movies: Freedom Writers, Children of Men, and Blood Diamond. All of them were good, none were great.

And finally, I mentioned that I was going to be out of town for a bit next month. Well, I cashed in some frequent flier miles and I'm going back to Brazil for 10 more days. The current plan is to go back to Rio de Janiero for 4 days during Carnaval, then spend 3 days in the former colonial mining town of Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais, followed by 3 days in coastal colonial town of Paraty before coming back to the USA via Sao Paulo.

Oh Yeah... and I got PlayStation 3, but haven't had a whole lot of time to play with it yet. I got one game, Tony Hawk's Project 8, and a bunch of Blu-ray DVDs. I also got a handy HDMI switch and some cables from MonoPrice.com since the PS3 doesn't come with an HDMI cable and my Sony TV only has one HDMI input which was connected to my HD-DVR/Cable Box. I got the 60GB version of the PS3 because it has built-in Wi-Fi access that allows you to connect to the internet wirelessly. It was pretty easy to setup and configure and so far I haven't had any problems with it. The next thing I need to get is the PS3 DVD Remote because it's too difficult to use the game controller and the PS2 DVD Remote is not compatible (PS2=IR, PS3=Bluetooth).

Jamie Morris : I Got My License! : Yamaha Virago: My Training Bike
Yamaha Virago: My Training Bike
I Got My License!

I finally got a driver's license this week. No, I still can't drive a car. It's a class M1 motorcycle license and it only took me a week to get it. Not bad considering I've never driven a motorcycle before. Here's how I did it... last Thursday I woke up early and went to the DMV before work and took the written tests for Class C and Class M permits. I just barely passed them both without really studying. That gave me permits to drive cars and motorcycles. I signed up for the California Motorcyclist Safety Program at the Westside Motorcycle Academy. The program consists of 5 hours of classroom training and 10 hours of riding in a parking lot. At the end of the classroom training you are given a written test and at the end of the two 5-hour riding sessions you are given a riding test. If you pass both tests, you can skip the DMV driving test and get your license immediately. On Thursday evening, I did the classroom training and took the written test. It was really easy. I got all 50 questions right. On Saturday morning, I woke up at 4:00am in order to make it to the training course by 5:30am to do the first riding session. I was really nervous. By the end of the first day of riding I was feeling a little more comfortable but still terrified and not sure if I was going to pass. Luckily, most of the people in my class were beginners and we were learning at the same pace. Sunday was rough. I had gotten home late Saturday night after a Kings game and again, I had to wake up at 4:00am after about 3 hours of sleep. I considered staying in bed and giving up on the class because I still wasn't very confident that I would pass. But, I got through it. By the end of the day I was starting to enjoy myself, but I still had a death-grip on the handlebars. There's so much coordination involved in riding... throttle, clutch lever, front brake lever, rear brake pedal, gear shift lever... it's hard to remember where everything is and what everything does, but I was starting to get used to it. At the end of the session, I took the riding test and passed. Phew! On Tuesday, I received a certificate stating that I completed the program successfully and today I took it over to the DMV and they handed me a license! Woohoo! Riding the bike was a lot of fun, but what I really want is a Vespa Scooter. I'm going to start looking for one and hopefully get one before summer. And, since I also got a Class C permit in the process, I'm probably going to take some car driving lessons to freshen up my driving skills and hopefully get around to getting my car driver's license too. I still have no plans on getting a car, but I figure I should probably just get the license now since I'm halfway there. Oh, and one other exciting thing happened today:

WE GOT BECKS!!!!

Jamie Morris : Meet The Kings Party : Jamie & Dave with Craig Conroy & Kevin Dallman

Meet The Kings Party

The Kings have started the new year okay with two wins and one overtime loss, but they'll put together a longer streak of consecutive wins if they want to have any chance at making the playoffs. Tonight was the annual "Meet The Players" Party for season tickets holders. It was my first time going and it was a lot of fun. I got to meet several current players: Anze Kopitar, Konstantin Pushkarev, Mattias Norstom, Alexander Frolov, Barry Brust, Lubomir Visnovsky, Tom Kostopulos, Craig Conroy and Kevin Dallman. And I also got to meet tv broadcaster and former Kings player Jim Fox. They all signed my jersey and I got pictures taken with most of them. Most of them are really friendly, especially the captain Matti Norstom. And they are HUGE! Unfortunately there's just not enough time to meet all the players in the 2.5 hour party because some of them had long lines. There's another event next month called "Tip A King" where you can get more autographs and pictures, but I'm going to be out of town... more on that later.
