Jamie Morris : Korean Wedding and American Soccer : Jamie In A Tuxedo
Jamie In A Tuxedo
Korean Wedding and American Soccer

This weekend went by way too fast. Saturday was the wedding. It was a really long day since I had to be at a beauty salon in Koreatown at 11am and the wedding didn't start until 4pm. The wedding and reception were at Immanuel Presbyterian Church. I had fun, although it was a little stressful at times when I couldn't understand what was going on. Hopefully Sharon and Jingoo will send some pictures soon.

UPDATE: Here are the photos!

On Sunday, I went to the USA vs Norway soccer game at the Home Depot Center. The US Men's National Team beat Norway 5-0 with Taylor Twellman scoring a hat trick (3 goals). Norway did not play well at all, but it was a historic win for the US because they've never beaten a European team by such a wide margin. Their next game will be against Japan in San Francisco on Friday, February 10th. The match will be on ESPN2.

Mmm... Grasshoppers

One of our new year's resolutions at work was to eat at some new restaurants because we always go to the same places. So far I've had Mexican, Peruvian, Japanese, Ethiopian, Italian, and Greek lunches. In fact, I haven't been to the same restaurant twice this year. Today I went to a Mexican restaurant and had Chapulines (Oaxacan grasshoppers). They were pretty tasty.

This afternoon, we got an email from US Soccer saying that our order for World Cup tickets was approved (see my earlier post about this). They made up some lame excuse about a computer virus prevented them from telling us on time. I'm pretty sure that's a lie. They still haven't told us what games we got tickets to. We're supposed to find out next week, but I'm not holding my breath.

Tonight I went to a screening of King Kong. I recently saw the 1976 Paramount version of the movie. I'm not sure if I've ever seen the original. The new one was quite different than the one I saw. It was much scarier and a lot longer (over three hours). It was really good, but it should have been shorter.

Jamie Morris : The Wedding Rehearsal : The Wedding Party
The Wedding Party
The Wedding Rehearsal

This week is all about Sharon. On Saturday, she'll be getting married to her fiance Jingoo. I was at the rehearsal tonight because I'm going to be a groomsman. It was pretty fun. I got to meet the parents and the rest of the wedding party. It's going to be a little strange for me because the ceremony is going to be in Korean. But, I don't have to do too much, so I'm not that nervous. I'm just disappointed that the groomsmen don't get to kiss the bride…

Jamie Morris : The Cure For Static Electricity : ZAPPPP!
ZAPPPP!
The Cure For Static Electricity

The static electricity in my apartment has gotten so bad, I've actually become afraid of lightswitches, door handles, and my computer. Yesterday, I decided to do something about it. Before I went to bed, I poured a little fabric softener in a spray bottle and then filled the rest of the bottle with water. I sprayed my carpet until the entire thing was moist and let it dry overnight. This morning when I got up, I went over to my lightswitch and turned on the light without getting shocked! Then, I opened my closet door, and didn't get shocked! I went over to my computer and unplugged my iPod and that didn't shock me either! My apartment smells a little like clean laundry today, but the static is gone. Hopefully it'll last through the winter.

Jamie Morris : Ashes and Snow, Beer and Champagne : Ashes And Snow: Child Reading to Elephant
Ashes And Snow: Child Reading to Elephant
Ashes and Snow, Beer and Champagne

I had a pretty good weekend. On Saturday morning, I went for a 15 mile bike ride from Santa Monica to Marina Del Rey and back. On the way back, I stopped at the Ashes and Snow exhibition at the Nomadic Museum next to the Santa Monica Pier. Ashes and Snow is a project by Gregory Colbert who has made over 30 expeditions to Africa, Asia, and India to photograph and film interactions between man and animals. The photos are blown up and printed in sepia tones on handmade Japanese paper. There are also three films being shown in the museum. The museum building is a temporary structure built from 152 steel cargo containers and giant paper tubes. It's a really great exhibit. I definitely recommend it. It will be at the Santa Monica Pier until May 14th.

Saturday was also Lisa's birthday. The party was at Dominick's Restaurant and fun was had by all. After the party, I ended up at Lisa's place where I had the pleasure of spending the night with three beautiful women: Lisa, Alex, and Paige. Today we were all a little hungover. We had breakfast at The Newsroom and spent the rest of the day inside watching movies. Back to work tomorrow…

The Gay Cowboy Movie

I went to a free screening of Brokeback Mountain tonight. I think it's pretty cool that a gay cowboy movie is getting so much attention, however, I wasn't that crazy about it. It's one of those long, slow-moving predictable dramas. It's not a gay western, it's a love story. I would have prefered a western.

Jamie Morris : Record Breaking Night at Staples Center : Luc Robitaille nets 550,551,552

Record Breaking Night at Staples Center

Dave and I went to Staples Center twice this week to see the Kings play. On Tuesday night, the Kings played Tampa Bay and lost 4-1. They didn't play well at all, but we had great seats down by the ice - 12th row.

Tonight, was a completely different game against the Atlanta Thrashers. The game started off with a Kings goal by Luc Robitaille. But it wasn't any goal. It was his 550th goal as a Kings player tieing the record as all-time Kings scoring leader! There were a bunch more goals and at the end of the second period, the Kings were losing 5-4. Luc Robitaille then got his 551st goal in the third period to break the scoring record and give the Kings the lead 6-5! To make it a completely perfect game, with 3 seconds left in the game and the Kings leading 7-6, Luc Robitaille got the puck in the Kings zone and shot it across the length of the ice towards the Thrashers empty net. The puck hit the post and bounced in giving Luc Robitaille his 552nd goal and a HAT TRICK! The Kings won 8-6.

Jamie Morris : New Musica : Album Of The Year: Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Album Of The Year: Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
New Musica

I hadn't bought any new CDs in awhile so I went over to Hear Music this weekend and picked up 6 albums. I highly recommend all of these. They are all really, really good.

Amadou & Mariam - Dimanche a Bamako
Great album by a blind couple from Mali. Produced by Manu Chao.
Boubacar Traoré - The Best of Boubacar Traore
Also from Mali. The best of the bluesman.
Curumin - Achados E Perdidos
Samba/Funk/Hip-Hop/Reggae mix from Brazil.
Dengue Fever - Escape from Dragon House
A Los Angeles garage rock band with Cambodian pop singer!
Seu Jorge - The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions
Steve Zissou's deckhand sings David Bowie covers in Portuguese!
Various Artists - Bar Bhangra
Indian dance/club music from the UK. Panjabi MC and more.

And I just realized that I hadn't put together a Top 10 list for 2005. Well, here are my favs:

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (I saw them 4 times this year!)
Danger Doom - The Mouse & The Mask (Danger Mouse rocks!)
Dresden Dolls - The Dresden Dolls (From Boston)
Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better (Always Good)
Gorillaz - Demon Days (Better than the debut album!)
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike (Indie Cheerleaders!)
M.I.A. - Arular (Very original)
The New Pornographers - Twin Cinema (Good stuff)
Oasis - Don't Believe the Truth (Hollywood Bowl!)

I HATE THE US SOCCER FEDERATION

Like many other US soccer fans, I am very unhappy with the US Soccer Federation today. On December 12th, we all had an opportunity to place an order for tickets to see the USA play in the World Cup in Germany. US Soccer gave us very specific instructions on how the sale would happen and how tickets would be allocated. They said that starting at 10am, we would all receive an application to order tickets via email which we had to fill out and either fax or mail the application to an address they were going to provide. Tickets were to be allocated on a first-come first-served basis and they said they made arrangements so they would be able to accept the large number of faxes. We would be notified by January 6th of the status of our order. If we did not get tickets, we could order tickets on January 6th from US Soccer or today from FIFA. December 12th didn't go as planned. They started sending out applications before 10am so some people had an unfair advantage. Many people tried to fax in their order all day but could not get through. At 5pm, we decided to give up on the fax and FedEx our order in so that it would arrive the next morning. Some people said they found an alternate fax number for US Soccer and faxed their order there even though the rules stated that orders could only be send to the one fax number. A couple days later we got a confirmation email saying that our order was received. My friend Dave, who I'm ordering tickets with, called a few days later to check on the order status. The person he spoke to said that because we were such loyal fans (Dave went to Guatemala this year to see the US play), he would put our order in the "VIP pile".

On January 5th, we all received an email from US Soccer stating that because the demand was so high, there would be no ticket sale on January 6th and that they would not be telling us the status of our orders until January 14th. January 14th was a very key date because the FIFA ticket sale ends on January 15th, and before placing an order on January 15th we had to know the status of our US Soccer order. If US Soccer allocated us tickets and we applied for more tickets through FIFA, both orders would be canceled! So... we needed to know either YES or NO from US Soccer by 3pm today. Some users got confirmation emails last night but many, including us, did not. Which basically means that US Soccer screwed all of us. A few minutes before 3pm, US Soccer posted a message on their website stating that if you did not recieve an email you were not getting tickets. But it was too late! Unfortunately, this was probably my best chance at getting tickets, and now I'm not even sure if I'll be able to go. I have applied for some tickets through FIFA and there is another ordering period next month through FIFA, but demand is so high, I think my chances are slim. My only hope is that the "VIP pile" really exists and they saved some tickets for us. But with the way US Soccer is handling things, I kinda doubt it. US Soccer really angered their biggest fans, just read some of the messageboard posts on Big Soccer.

I'm Back

Sorry for the lack of updates over the past few weeks. It's mainly due to the fact that I got a new computer (actually it's used) and it's taken me awhile to get it all set up. To briefly sum up the past two weeks, I'll just say that last week was great because Isabell was here visiting and this week totally sucked. I won't say why because people have been know to get fired for blogging about those kinds of things. At least it's a long weekend. Happy Holidays!

Happy New Year!

It took me 22 hours to get from Maine to California on Monday thanks to United. They told us it was because there was some rain in Chicago. Apparently it has never rained there before and planes cannot get wet. I had no idea. My luggage is also missing or "delayed". I'm not expecting to see it anytime soon. Isabell made it here today without any major issues, so all is good.
