Summer Friday #10 of 15

I got to leave work at 1:00 again today. First, I went to the bike shop to get my bike which was getting it's 30-day checkup and then went for a ride on the beach bike path. I've been riding a lot lately. My longest ride was on Saturday when Niki and I rode from Santa Monica to Manhattan Beach and back which was over 25 miles. Today I just went down to Marina Del Rey and back. On the way home, I stopped at Pick Up Stix and got some House Special Tofu (mmm). After that I went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which I had heard mixed reviews of, but I had to go because I love Tim Burton (and chocolate). Burton's remake of the movie has some differences from the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, but apparently it follows the book more closely than the 1971 film did. Although I'm really tired of remakes (can't anyone come up with a good original movie idea?), I liked this movie very much, especially the squirrels. Before the movie, they showed a trailer for Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride which I really can't wait for. It looks like it's going to be a lot like The Nightmare Before Christmas, one of my favorite movies. After the movie, I met up with Lisa, Leah and Alex and we had a couple of drinks at The Dime, a cool little bar on Fairfax which was fun even though it was a little noisy and crowded. After that I went back to Alex and Lisa's place for one more drink before heading home, but, as usual, one drink ended up being many drinks and around 3:30am I realized probably wasn't going to make it home. Saturday's going to be a recovery day.

A Hard Floor Up Here For A Pimp

I went to another Paramount movie tonight. This time it was the employee screening of Hustle & Flow, a story about a Memphis pimp who tries to make it as a rapper. The movie was actually really good, but it was a bit uncomfortable because Lashaun and I had to sit in the back of the Paramount Theatre on the floor in order to see it. The theater was completely full and we got there late and there was nowhere else to sit.

Jamie Morris : Paramount Pictures : Audrey Hepburn: Une Very Stylish Fille
Audrey Hepburn: Une Very Stylish Fille
Paramount Pictures

I saw two Paramount movies this weekend. The first was the new The Bad News Bears movie. It is pretty much of an exact remake of the original 1976 movie except that it's a little less offensive and not quite as good. I don't really see the point of remaking good old movies unless you're going to change them significantly. The Italian Job was a good one and so was War Of The Worlds. I would have rather seen a new episode in the Bad News Bears series than a remake. The other movie I saw was Breakfast At Tiffany's, a great movie from 1961 starring Audrey Hepburn and also featuring Buddy Ebsen and Mickey Rooney. The movie was part of Cinespia's screenings at Hollywood Forever Cemetery which are getting really popular. I think they're going to have to move some graves to make more space for us.

Jamie Morris : Galaxy vs. Galacticos : Not A Bad Result For The Home Team
Not A Bad Result For The Home Team
Galaxy vs. Galacticos

One of the most famous teams in sports, Real Madrid, made a stop in Los Angeles this week on their 2005 World Tour. On Sunday, I went to their "Private Closed Door Training Session" at the Home Depot Center in hopes of getting some autographs, but I got nothing. I did get to see the team practice for about 90 minutes which was pretty cool. After about 90 minutes, some idiot from the crowd jumped on the field and started running towards the players. The players got up and left the field and didn't come back out. Who could blame them? But the crowd wasn't too happy. They cheered the guy who ran on the field and booed Madrid for going inside.

Monday night was the big game against the LA Galaxy. The Galaxy, who were missing some of their best players, did pretty well against the "Galacticos" who have some of, I mean most of, the best players in the world. Madrid brought all their top players on the tour and we got to see most of them play: David Beckham, Michael Owen, Raul, Figo, Zidane, Roberto Carlos, Cassillas. The only major star that didn't play in the match was Ronaldo. Figo and Zidane were the most impressive to watch and I almost got Figo's autograph. The Galaxy had a bunch of chances to score in the first half, but the ended the match without a goal. The Galaxy's goalkeeper, Kevin Hartman, kept them in the game with some great saves. Real ended up winning 2-0, a respectable result for the Galaxy. LA Galaxy Match Summary. Real Madrid Match Summary. Here are the pictures I took.

A Visit From Kristin

Isabel went back to Brazil last week, just as my friend Kristin arrived in LA for a weeklong visit. So, I've been sharing my apartment for the past couple of weeks which accounts for why I haven't been updating my website and my apartment is a mess. Last Thursday night Kristin and I went to the House Of Blues and saw Built To Spill. Opening up was a band called Ape Shape. We both agreed that they were probably the worst band we'd ever seen (and we've been to a lot of concerts). Built To Spill were good while they were playing, but they spent way too much time between songs fiddling with their instruments and didn't end up playing that many songs. We were a little disappointed. I found out later that the Friday show was much better.

On Friday, I turned 30. We had some birthday cake at work and then Kristin took me out to lunch. Then we took off for San Francisco and had a great dinner in Chinatown on Friday night. On Saturday we went shopping on Haight. I got a cool Onitsuka Tiger jacket and a bunch of CDs from Amoeba. On Sunday, we went to a picnic in Lafayette Park and then went to the Giants game at 5:05pm. The game was supposed to be at 1:05pm, but it got changed at the last minute because it became the ESPN Game Of The Week. Unfortunately, the last flight back to LA was at 9:30pm and we had to leave the game early to get to the airport on time. SBC Park is really nice and it's got good food (Ghirardelli Hot Fudge Sundaes!). The Cardinals ended up beating the Giants 4-3. When we left it was 4-1. Being a Dodgers fan, I was cheering against the Giants.

Jamie Morris : Boston & Maine : Jamie & Niki in Boston

Boston & Maine

I went home to Maine for the long weekend and took my pal Niki (an outtahstatah) with me. We left LA on Friday night on a red-eye and arrived in Boston on Saturday morning with no sleep. I showed Niki some of the sights - Quincy Markey, Copley Square, Newbury Street, Fenway Park, and the North End. We had some great Italian food at The Daily Catch and some cannolis from Mike's Pastry. We also went to the top of the Prudential Center and had some fancy drinks before catching a bus to Maine.

On Sunday, my parents took us to Acadia National Park and we spent the whole day there walking around and having some Lobster Chowder and Popovers at the Jordan Pond House. On the way home, we stopped at Dysart's Truck Stop for dinner.

Monday was another long day. We started out with a trip down to Androscoggin Lake before coming home to have a lobster and steamers feast for my birthday. In the afternoon, we took another trip to the coast to see New Harbor and Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, one of the most scenic lighthouses on the east-coast. From New Harbor, we took a cruise to Boothbay Harbor and watched the fireworks show from the boat.

We went to LL Bean on Tuesday before heading back to LA.

Here are some pictures that Niki took!
