Happy Easter Bunny Day!

We finally had a fairly nice weekend, so I spent most of my time here in Santa Monica. I watched a bunch of World Cup Qualifier matches including USA's defeat in Mexico today. On Saturday, Niki came to visit and we took a walk down by the beach and had a beer and some crab nachos on the pier. Then we went to the King's Head to meet Elaine and her brit friend who I'm jealous of because he was wearing limited edition Ian Brown Adidas sneakers. I have to get myself a pair of them on eBay. We had some drinks, played some darts, and did some shopping on the promenade. Today I rollerbladed down to Venice Beach and back and took a walk to Main Street. Unfortunately, the store I wanted to go to was closed - must be for Easter.

Moderate Antioxidant Levels

Pomp Salon is the new hair care salon owned by Lisa Dixon located in my apartment building, Pacific Plaza. There was a special event there tonight and my pals Alex and Lisa of Aqua Leaf Designs were there to sell their jewelry. There was also someone there giving free antioxidant level scans. Basically, you place your hand on this machine for two minutes and the computer spits out a number which is supposed to tell you how your antioxidant levels are. I got a score of 24,000 which is what the average person gets. Of course, they tell you that you're levels are very low and that buy purchasing their premium LifePak vitamins, you'll be able to get your levels up to a higher score. I'll think about it.

After the event, we went over to Ma'Kai for some food and drinks. The food there is really good and they make the best mojitos, but the people who go there are just really icky.

Be Cool

Tonight I went to a free screening of Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty, which I never saw. It's a parody of the music business that doesn't really have much of a plot, but it is pretty funny. It's only funny because of all the big stars in it: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, The Rock, Vince Vaughn, Cedric The Entertainer, Danny Devito, and a bunch of others. Without them, it would be a pretty bad film, but they make it entertaining.

After the movie, Alex and I went over to the King's Head Pub for some fish & chips and drinks. We ended up staying there until 2:00am playing darts. My third night in a row going out... yawn.

Jamie Morris : Bloc Party @ The Troubadour : Bloc Party in LA
Bloc Party in LA
Bloc Party @ The Troubadour

Back at the Troubadour for the second night in a row. Tonight it was to see Bloc Party, the most hyped band in the world right now (NME says they're as vital as The Clash - others say they will be as big as U2) on the second date of their first ever US tour. I pretty much completely missed the opening acts, Dance Disaster Movement and Erase Errata, due to the hurricane-like weather conditions we were having, but at least the show was running on time - unlike last night. Bloc Party went on stage at 10:15pm and played for 70 minutes(!). They were really, really good. The singer, Kele Okereke (who also sings on the Chemical Brothers new album), is amazing. As good as all the hype? Maybe. I certainly don't regret paying $58 to someone on eBay for the ticket and I'll most definitely be going back to see them in June when they play at the El Rey. Their new album, Silent Alarm, just came out today. I suggest you buy it now.

Jamie Morris : Kaiser Chiefs @ The Troubadour : Kaiser Chiefs in Hollywood
Kaiser Chiefs in Hollywood
Kaiser Chiefs @ The Troubadour

Tonight was the first of at least two nights that I'll be at the Troubadour this week. I got there at 9:15pm expecting to miss the opening band, Maximo Park, but they were running about 20 minutes late so I got to hear their last two songs. They were actually quite good. In the UK, they're in the top 20 and they're on MTV there. Next was Morningwood, a trashy punk/garage-rock band from NYC which a terrible name. The singer opened the show saying she was there to put the T&A back in rock. Well, she did spend most of the show trying to draw attention to her breasts. Probably because she couldn't sing. She did have personality, but it was odd to see them play between two British neo-new wave bands. Kaiser Chiefs roadies took forever to set up. They ended up going on at 11:00pm, an hour late. The put on a good show, but it was very short. I was amazed at how many of the kids new all the words to their songs when their album has been out less than a week. They finished their encore 45 minutes after they went onstage. A little disappointing - I think the roadies took longer to set up their stuff.

Work Work Work

It's been a rough couple of weeks for me at work. That's why I haven't been blogging so much. I've been busy setting up some new database servers (which has not been going well), doing flash programming (which I'm not very good at), going to bad meetings (long, unpleasant ones), and dealing with our production databases failing. Not a very fun month so far. I think I need to go to the King's Head tonight and have a few pints of Boddies. I can't wait until next month when I have a few days off to go to Colorado.

Jamie Morris : The Futureheads @ The Fonda : Futureheads Ticket & Badge
Futureheads Ticket & Badge
The Futureheads @ The Fonda

I went over to the Henry Fonda Threatre on Hollywood Boulevard tonight to see The Futureheads, a new-wavey indie rock band from England that sounds something like Franz Ferdinand. Opening up was The High Speed Scene from LA and The Shout Out Louds from Sweden. I missed all but half of the The High Speed Scene's last song because I was buying CDs at Amoeba and having a pint at The Cat and Fiddle, so I'm not sure if they were any good. I watched The Shout Out Louds from the balcony. They had a few catchy tunes - not bad. I went down on the floor and got up close for The Futureheads. They put on a great show. A fun live band. They really get the crowd into it and all four of them sing! They were onstage for an hour, playing almost every song on their debut album as well as a couple of non-album tracks. They were also filming the show, but I'm not sure why.

Weekend Update

After spending so much money last weekend shopping, I decided to stay in this weekend and save some money. The most money I spent all weekend was on groceries which included drinks mainly and Cadbury Mini Eggs! Mmmm. On Saturday night, I met Alex and Lisa for a few drinks at Ma'Kai, the trendy new asian/polynesian bar on Ocean Ave that replaced Rebecca's. Usually when I walk by it on Thursday and Friday nights, they're playing really loud obnoxious music and there's a line of icky people waiting to get in. But on Saturday it wasn't so bad. I had four mojitos that were really good. One of the bartenders spilled one of them and only ended up charging us for one.

Breakfast With The CEO

This morning, the Paramount Motion Picture Group (which includes my company - Paramount Digital Entertainment) had breakfast with our new CEO, Brad Grey, who replaced Sherry Lansing this week. Brad was introduced to us by A.C. Lyles, Paramount's oldest employee. He's been an employee for 77 years(!) and gave an inspiring speech about how he hoped Brad would take Paramount back to its glory days. Brad gave a speech, but didn't say a whole lot. Let's hope he can help Paramount do some better movies.

Tonight I went to a screening of Boogeyman (a Sony film) which was actually pretty scary. It had a stupid plot and really lame special effects, but the number of scary scenes made it a gripping movie from beginning to end.
