Jamie Morris : null : honeybird
honeybird

Friday night I went to see Radiohead and Supergrass at the Hollywood Bowl. I was more excited about seeing Supergrass than Radiohead because I've never seen them before, and I think I fell asleep the last time I saw Radiohead. We go to the show late, so I missed most of the Supergrass set. Radiohead put on a great show. They played a good mix of songs from all their albums. Here's the setlist and some reviews. Apparently it was a much better show than the one on Thursday, but it was a little too long for me... 2 hours.

On Saturday night, I went to see another Cinespia movie at the cemetery. The movie was "Night of the Hunter" and was probably the best one I've seen there yet. However, they were making lots of noise next door at Paramount Pictures while we were trying to watch the movie. There were helicopters flying around and gun shots going off for about half the movie. It was kind of annoying.

After the movie, I went to see my friend Monique's photography show and got my very own personalized honeybird to take home with me!

This week I started my J2EE Web Application Architecture class at UCLA Extension. I think I'm going to learn a lot in it. Also, this week, I've been watching the Women's World Cup. Today the USA beat Nigeria 5-0, which pretty much guarantees them a spot in the quarterfinals. And in other exciting news, Paramount put out another good movie this year! I just went to a screening of School Of Rock and it's great.

Jamie Morris : null : Women's World Cup
Women's World Cup

Today was a day of soccer for me. I got up really early this morning to go to the Cock 'n Bull English Pub to watch the Manchester United vs. Arsenal match live. Then I went home and watched the USA Women's World Cup match against Sweden. Then I went to see two World Cup matches live at the Home Depot Center: Australia vs Russia and China vs Ghana. I managed to score myself a press pass so I got to go hang out in the press box for a little while and have some dinner. Mmm.

I went shopping today and picked up a couple new shirts at Fred Segal. This weekend was their annual sale where everything is 50% off. Also went to see Millennium Actress which is a great Japanese animated film.

Belle & Sebastian fans! The band's new album "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" doesn't come out until next month, but I just found out that if you pre-order it from Amazon.com, you can start listening to the album right now! Buy it now! It's REALLY, REALLY GOOD!

I saw The Fighting Temptations tonight. Pretty good movie, really good music.

I saw a great movie on Tuesday night called In This World. It's about two young boys from Afghanistan that attempt to make a long, dangerous trek to London. The story is fictional but it feels like a documentary. The two boys that star in the film are actual Afgani refugees.

A sad day for soccer and women's sports in the United States. Just days before the the United States hosts the 2003 Women's World Cup, the WUSA soccer league announced they are shutting down operations because they don't have enough sponsors. It's really too bad because the best women soccer players in the world play in this league. Hopefully, the World Cup will help attract some new sponsors so they can start up again soon.

Today I went to see Once Upon A Time In Mexico. It was a pretty good movie. I also spent a lot of time today planning a trip to England. I'm going to London, Birmingham, and Liverpool in November.

Pick Up On South Street

Niki and I went to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery tonight for a screening of Pick Up On South Street by the Cinespia film society. Seeing old movies in a cemetery is a lot of fun. I highly recommend it.

Jamie Morris : null : Black Flag in 1980
Black Flag in 1980

A sad day... Johnny Cash died this morning. I was lucky enough to see him perform once at Irving Plaza in New York City in 1996. Here's a picture I took from the front row.

Tonight, I went to see the sold out Black Flag reunion concert at the Hollywood Palladium. The concert was a benefit for some local cat rescue organizations and was supposed to feature early members of the band performing songs from their first four years. Unfortunately, since it was a benefit and the band wasn't getting paid, several key members(Keith, Chuck, Chavo) decided not to participate. The concert started will two opening bands that noone really wanted to see and the crowd started booing. Finally, "Black Flag" hit the stage, but it was only half of Black Flag. It was Greg Ginn and Dez Cadena on guitars, the singer from one of the opening acts, and a drummer who wasn't even introduced. These guys performed the entire My War album (possibly the band's worst album - and certainly NOT from their first four years). The crowd went nuts while they were performing (i haven't been crushed up against the people in front of me at a show in years), but booed between songs. The person next to me held up a sign with the Black Flag logo that said "Bait - Switch" instead of "Black - Flag" and threw it at Ginn. After "My War", they took a short break and set up some new equipment. Finally, their legendary drummer Robo (who also played with The Misfits) came out. And with Ginn on guitar and Dez finally on vocals, the band performed a long set of early songs. After one more break, and another drummer change, they came back out and did another set. In the end, they ended up playing every from The First Four Years disc and several from Damaged. The crowd was happy, and so was I until some guy decided to stage dive onto my head after the show had ended. I lost my glasses but luckily found them before someone stepped on them, but I've got plenty of bruises.

Jamie Morris : null : Pistols
Pistols

I spent most of the day inside today doing some work and watching some soccer and tennis. Tonight I went to the show at the Greek. The Sex Pistols headlined the show, but they only played for about an hour. They put on a good show, but I wasn't as excited about it as I was when I saw them for the first time last year at Inland Invasion. The Dropkick Murphys were just okay. Normally they are amazing, but I'm just not into their newer material. They were much better live when I used to go see them at The Rat in Boston. The Reverend Horton Heat opened the show with a great, but brief (30 min) psychobilly set. Read this review.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 05, 2003

I just finished a Fatburger with Fat Fries and now I'm really full. Today was a long day. I woke up around 6am to the sound of water running. A pipe had broken in the ceiling above my bathroom and the water was pouring out a crack in my ceiling all over my bathroom floor. After that was fixed, I went into work and didn't do a whole lot. Then I went to a screening of Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star which was pretty funny. And now I'm sleepy. Good night.

Jamie Morris : null : United States WNT
United States WNT

Tonight I went to see the US Women's National Soccer Team play their first match at their new stadium, the Home Depot Center in Carson. They beat Costa Rica 5-0 in a warm-up match for the World Cup. It was cool to see them live, but the game wasn't that great. Costa Rica didn't have a chance against the US (whose ranked #1 in the world). They didn't even get one shot on goal. I've also got tickets to the World Cup final, so hopefully the US team will make it that far. That should be a much better match.
