Jamie Morris : null : Frank Black
Frank Black

I went to see Frank Black do a solo acoustic set at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica tonight. He was amazing. He even played five Pixies songs (Caribou, Where Is My Mind?, Mr. Grieves, Wave Of Mutilation, Velouria) which I wasn't expecting because the last time I saw him at The Strand in Providence in 1994, he only played music from his first solo album. That night he was opening for the Ramones and practically got booed off stage because none of the punk rock kids wanted to hear him. He didn't get any boos tonight.

Missy @ VMAs

Tonight I watched the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. It's usually the best awards show of the year in my opinion, but this year it was kinda boring. The presenters were just reading teleprompters, there really weren't many good videos this year, they seemed to be having a lot of audio problems, and the performances were really bad. Especially Madonna. I think it's time for her to retire. Her new music is terrible and kissing Britney and Christina... I guess she was trying to be shocking, but she's just not anymore. It's kinda gross... she's like three times their age. As I was writing this, Metallica came onstage and started playing an instrumental medley of cover songs which was really cool, but they stopped after about a minute and started playing one of their new (bad) songs. Oh well.

I had a great weekend. I got to see my favorite band (Belle & Sebastian) play twice in three days! I went up to San Francisco to see them play at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley on Friday night and then came back to see them at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday night. They were amazing. I'd seen them play twice before, but I got to here them play many songs I've never heard live before and a few of their news songs that aren't even out yet. One of the best treats was when the band's new producer, Trevor Horn of The Buggles, came onstage and sang "Video Killed The Radio Star." In LA, I got to go backstage after the show, but I was too chicken to go talk to them, but I did eat some of their food!

I'm still recovering from the wild and crazy StarTrek.com launch party Tuesday night. Ten hours of drinking.... oh my head. Luckily at 2AM I was home sweet home. See ya next week. I'm going to San Fran to see Belle & Sebastian and Nick & Allison! Byeeee!

I went to the Whisky A Go Go last night to see my friend Greg's band, M.P.D.Q., play. They were great, but I really hate hanging out on the Sunset Strip. All the people are really EWW. Other than that, I did a little biking and rollerblading and spent way too much time inside watching the Soccer Channel this weekend. Oh well, next weekend will come fast. I'm taking Friday off to go up to San Francisco for a 3-day weekend.

Freddy vs. Jason Premiere

I guess this week is all about movies. Tonight, I went to the premiere of Freddy vs. Jason at the Cinerama Dome. I heard Beyoncé was going to be there, so I was hoping to sit next to her, but instead I got to sit next to the director, Ronny Yu, who turned out to be much cooler. He directed "Bride Of Chucky." How cool is that? He talked to me about the movie, pointed out some famous people, and told me his dream is to direct a James Bond film. Nice guy, and the movie was a lot of fun too. Go see it!

Jamie Morris : null : Pier Movies
Pier Movies

The Santa Monica Film Festival is showing movies at the pier every Tuesday this month. Tonight, was Jaws. I took my beach chair down to the pier to check it out. It was a blast, but I prefer the cemetery.

Jamie Morris : null : The Spiral Staircase
The Spiral Staircase

Today was a really fun day. I spent the day at the beach boogieboarding, rollerblading and drinking margaritas on the pier. Then tonight I went to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. About once a month, Cinespia screens a scary old movie at the cemetery. Tonight, they screened "The Spiral Staircase" - a suspenseful 1945 film about a madman who murders women with physical defects. We almost didn't get in because there were so many people. But, I'm glad we did because it was soooo much fun. We brought a blanket and some wine & cheese and watched the movie under the stars (and the helicopters).

Today Erin took me and Isabel to Koji's Shabu Shabu restaurant for lunch. It was an interesting experience. They give you a pot of water along with some raw vegetables, noodles, and meat which you cook yourself at your table. Shabu shabu means "swish-swish," referring to the swishing action when you cook a very thin slice of beef in hot water. It was fun, but not as tasty as Japanese BBQ. Tonight I went to see Legally Blonde 2 which wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but not nearly as funny as American Wedding which I saw this past weekend.

Jamie Morris : null : MLS All-Star Game
MLS All-Star Game

Besides working a lot, I've also watched a lot of soccer this week. There have been a lot of great clubs playing in the USA this week during the ChampionsWorld Series. Also, today was the Major League Soccer Allstar Game. The match was here in Carson so I got to go. The MLS Allstars took on the Chivas de Guadalajara, a popular club from Mexico, and won 3-1! It's so nice to finally have a great soccer venue nearby. I've already got plans to go to a bunch of games.

I haven't had much time to update my site this week because I've been working late on the new Star Trek website. Tonight I went to see And Now Ladies and Gentleman. Not a bad movie, but a little long for me.
